As an artist, my creative process is often fueled by the things I’m passionate about. For me, cars have always held a special place in my heart. That’s why I’m excited to introduce one of my favorite pieces, "Shorty", a 12” by 16” acrylic painting on canvas that brings together my love of muscle cars, good friends, and the thrill of the open road.
A Post-Impressionist Take on the 1970 Dodge Challenger
"Shorty" was created using a primarily pallet knife technique, which lends a textured, bold, and somewhat rugged look to the painting—a perfect match for the subject matter. This piece has a distinct Post-Impressionism style, which allows me to move away from exact realism and focus on the emotional energy and movement that fast cars and asphalt represent. I also incorporated a fine paintbrush for the final highlights, adding just enough precision to sharpen certain details, without losing the rawness that I aimed for.

The centerpiece of "Shorty" is one of my favorite muscle cars of all time, the blue 1970 Dodge Challenger. This vehicle is iconic not just for its looks, but for the sheer power and attitude it brings to the road. The Challenger, with its aggressive stance and growling engine, has always been a symbol of freedom and speed to me. I wanted to capture that spirit in the painting—the way it dominates the road and leaves a trail of tire smoke behind.
A Personal Connection: The Inspiration Behind the Name
The name "Shorty" holds personal significance. It’s the nickname of one of my good friends, who shares my love of fast cars and has been a partner in crime with me for many wild rides. In fact, some of our best memories involve roaring engines, the smell of burning rubber, and doing burnouts at every opportunity. This painting is a tribute to those unforgettable moments.
The Details: Colors and Composition
I chose a vibrant blue for the Challenger, giving the car a sense of coolness and sleek power that stands out against the neutral tones of the road and background. The blue also symbolizes freedom and endless possibility, much like the feeling you get when you’re behind the wheel of a car like this, with miles of open road ahead of you.
To further enhance the road-inspired theme, I painted the edges of the canvas yellow, mimicking the yellow pavement markings found on streets and highways. This small detail ties the entire piece together and subtly reminds the viewer of the rush of driving on an open road, where the only thing separating you from adventure is a thin line of paint.
A Reflection of Passion and Craftsmanship
At its core, "Shorty" is not just a painting of a car; it’s a reflection of passion—both for art and for the freedom that cars represent. By using a palette knife for most of the painting, I was able to create an almost tactile sense of movement and texture, as if the car is in motion, kicking up asphalt in its wake. The finishing touches with a fine brush bring clarity to key areas, making sure the car itself remains the focal point.
This painting celebrates more than just a vehicle; it celebrates friendship, shared experiences, and the adrenaline rush that comes with pushing limits, both on the road and on the canvas.
Closing Thoughts
Whether you're a car enthusiast like me or simply someone who appreciates bold, energetic art, "Shorty" is a piece that resonates with the thrill of speed, adventure, and the bonds formed along the way. This painting is a personal favorite of mine, not just for its subject matter, but because it represents a part of my life that is filled with excitement and great memories. And in a way, "Shorty" isn’t just a car or a nickname—it’s a celebration of living life in the fast lane.
